NSD offers design services for green, sustainable alternatives to bulkheads or other “hard” shore protection techniques that use aesthetic, non-toxic, and “shore friendly” approaches and materials — for both people and wildlife. These designs provide easy beach access using natural materials, minimize maintenance, and are typically much less expensive than traditional bulkheads. We have developed best practices guidelines for soft shore protection/nature-based solutions in the Puget Sound region as the lead author of WDFW’s Marine Shoreline Design Guidelines in 2014.
NSD can help assess erosion and flooding risk to a site through remote analysis, a site visit, mapping, recommended action, design development, permitting, and assistance with construction. We utilize realistic site-specific projections of sea level rise to design for future conditions.
