NSD + CGS provided site assessment, design and construction supervision using a field-directed approach to remove a fish passage barrier and restore approximately 400 ft. of tributary channel to Ellsworth Creek, historically a very productive chum fishery. Schematic level plans were developed and submitted to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), who procured construction funding from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board. A local contractor was selected by TNC to build the project based on time and materials charges. TNC staff directed removal of 6,500 cy of road fill based on the design plans and Mike (Rocky) Hrachovec, P.E. directed final channel grading, aggregate installation, installation of over 200 pieces of large woody material along the channel and creation of an adjacent 3,000 sq. ft. of wetland restoration and invasive species removal. The project now hosts chum and coho fry, and the wetland supports breeding and emergence of salamanders, red-legged newt and two species of native frogs.
